Seamed stockings may have looked very glamorous but they were hugely uncomfortable to wear and even worse trouble was in keeping the seam straight.
Why should anyone worry about keeping a seam straight? Well, for our younger readers, perhaps we had better describe what a seam actually was or is.
A seam in a stocking is where the two sides of a stocking meet and are sewn together to form a seam. Usually the stocking is comprised of one piece of nylon or silk material sewn up at the seam. This seam then becomes a slight ridge and this ridge, known as a seam, runs up the back of the stocking which runs up the back of a woman’s leg.
